RBRB operates a similar system of call-out to any complementary RNLI station. The requirement for the boat to launch is notified to the crew from HMCG through a village contact. A maroon is fired if crew are in the village, otherwise they are summoned by phone. All operational crewmen carry mobiles when away from home or work site, and the village contacts are kept aware on a daily basis of who is available for duty. |
During the holiday periods a helmsman will ideally be available within the village, and the boat would expect to be at sea within 5 minutes. During the winter months an immediate crew cannot always be guaranteed so the service operates on a notice to launch of within 30 minutes. This time limit will invariably be preceded. |

Many services within the Bay are self-initiated following obvious signs of distress or sighting an incident from the shoreline. Under these circumstances the helmsman will initiate the launch while informing the Coastguard of the action being taken. Once at sea the boat comes under the overall control of HMCG using the VHF radio link, or by phone from the boathouse which is often in a good position to relay information.
